It’s that time of the year, when there’s a nip in the air and a string of celebrations – Navratras, Durga Puja, Diwali, Christmas and the final frontier of partying this year – New Year’s Eve! But even as you plan your next card party, what do you do about that tiny voice in your mind saying, “Calories! Weight-gain! No!”

We, at mydala, believe that you should be able to enjoy the season, but in such a manner that you don’t have to take a guilt-laden trip once the holidays are over. We spoke with well-known Delhi-based nutritionist, Anupama Shastry, to bring you some very do-able tips to avoid the weight gain while celebrating with friends and family. With over ten years of experience, she is also one of the very few Diabetes educators in India.

Read on!

     1.   Exercise portion control

It’s the festive season, and there will be thalis of mithai doing the rounds where ever you go. However this doesn’t mean that you need to sample everything that’s on offer.  Go in for those sweets that are relatively less fried and with less maida. Instead of a gulabjamun opt for a rasgulla. Replace cakes, pastries and croissants with kheer, fruit custard or a flavourful sorbet. And please, no more than 2 helpings in a day.

     2.   Keep moving

If you keep burning some calories, the damage is that much lesser. A quick walk in the park, or 40 mins on the treadmill will ensure that you are able to burn what you ate. Check out some fitness deals at mydala – the savings will be motivation enough to get you started!

     3.   Time your calorie intake

If you are going to have some stuffed kachoris with deep-fried aloos, try having it for breakfast or even lunch. Give your body the chance to burn out the calories. Avoid a high-calorie dinner because as you sleep, the calories creep in.

     4.   Go a-la carte

An all-you-can-eat meal might make your mouth water, but it just makes it harder for you to check your portions. Many people also feel they must overeat to justify the costs of the meal. Do yourself a favour – order a-la carte and avoid the buffet.

     5.     Hydrate

What all doctors tell you all the time, but as you never listen, has to be said once more – drink LOTS of water! Often we face “false hunger” – when our mind confuses thirst with hunger, and we reach out for a snack when all we should have had is a glass of water. Not having enough water also leads to bloating and water retention. So drink up!

     6.    Eat before you step out

Don’t arrive at a party hungry. Because if you do, there is no way you will not over-eat. Have a small snack before leaving – a sandwich/ salad/ soup or boiled sprouts. Carry a fruit, a fistful of nuts or some roasted chanas and have it while you drive to the venue.

     7.    Keep it small

What is a celebration without some alcohol? Well, in case you have to drink, at least stick to a small peg. Avoid cocktails, mocktails, Breezers etc. as these are laden with sugar. Keep sipping sparkling/iced water or a lemon soda; it will help in keeping temptations at bay. Also don’t drink on an empty stomach. Red wine is the best drink to celebrate with. A glass of red is the richest source of resveratrol, which has several health benefits.wine Strategies To Eat, Drink And Still Stay Fit This Festive Season

      8.   Choose wisely

Go out by all means; just ensure that you order the right food – something that is filling as well as delicious. Make sure you attend all the parties which will have a barbeque running – a grilled dinner is your best bet. Opt for grilled fish, paneer tikka, fresh dokhale, dim sums or steamed idlis.
