When it comes to setting trends, be it hair or fashion, Bollywood has always been the prime influencer. Creating quite a sensation, our celebs and their legendary hairstyles have always been a source of admiration and inspiration (even to the point of mass hysteria!)
From retro to modern times, here’s a glimpse of the evolution of hairstyles in Bollywood!
The 40’s saw the gorgeous Begum Para & the charismatic Nargis wear their soft wavy curls in a short bob, a hairstyle ladies love till date.
Slicked back or tousled, Dilip Kumar’s hair became the talk of town in the 40’s and 50’s for not just the ladies but the menfolk as well …
The epitome of timeless beauty Madhubala, gave us the ultimate au natural look in the 50’s. The curly side braid & the side swept look were popularized by her and her contemporaries.
The quiff – a classic vintage hairdo was popularized in the 50’s and 60’s by celebs like Dev Anand & Shammi Kapoor.
Several iconic Bollywood hairstyles emerged in the 60’s, like the legendary ‘Sadhna Cut’ …
… Or popular Hollywood inspired hairstyles like the voluminous bouffant and the beehive.
The 70’s were a time of flamboyance & the Bollywood retro brigade churned out new trends for an entire generation. Styles varied but trademark looks like the “slightly overgrown” hair was becoming increasingly popular with young men across India.
Divas like Zeenat Aman, Parveen Babi, Neetu Singh, Rekha, Dimple Kapadia and Hema Malini all ushered in a decade of natural flair.
Long hair kept loose or accessorized with funky hats or braided up for a sweet ‘girl next door’ look was the definitive style statement.
The 80’s was totally obsessed with ‘BIG’ hair! We saw Anil Kapoor’s overgrown & messy hair became the ultimate trademark of machismo, while the ‘mullet’ was popularized by Sanjay Dutt, Mithun & Salman Khan.
Perms and frizzy, voluminous curls was the preferred choice for Bollywood’s leading ladies, not just in the 80’s …
… But even in the 90’s!
And the 90’s … well how can we forget the 90’s!
And then we saw the 21st century bring its own share of styles, starting with this much loved Bollywood hairstyle which inspired boys across the country!
And the story continues …
From then till now, it’s been quite a fascinating journey & Bollywood continues to inspire. We love the way our celebs bring forth the best (or the worst!) in terms of trends & style statements and well, here’s looking forward to more interesting stuff in the future!
